The Story that is sharply contrasting. The true joy for a teacher !
The past week has seen the announcements of the results of IITJEE and AIEEE, the twin engineering entrance exams of the country. Nitin Jain, a young lad from Faridabad ( a town adjacent to Delhi), has cracked both the exams. It is rather uncommon to see the same student cracking both these entrance exams. At least, I cannot recall any other over the past decade or so.
Needless to say, it is an achievement that Nitin would be hugely proud of and his career has just changed a million orbits and would see him building a hugely successful career that he and his parents would have been dreaming of and worked towards over the past few years. Of course, he has to stay rooted and not commit some blunders that is always a possibility in the Youthdom !
I am sure you would also have followed a rather hilarious (or was that annoying ?) sub-plot around this inspiring story of Nitin and his achievements.
This piece is about another story that is sharply contrasting to Nitin’s story but equally inspiring. While Nitin was a topper and an acknowledged student-brilliant for a few years, Harpreet was a rather mediocre student and labeled so at the end of his Class X. His story becomes rather inspiring over what he has achieved over the past two years. For those teachers and his parents who assisted him in this digging-deep journey, I am sure this will be a rather proud moment. As proud as Nitins’ if not more.
The Protagonist’s journey : As remembered by his Teacher, Sharad Awasthi.
“Main facts about Harpreet Matharoo ( 58 % in Class X to 603 AIR in JEE 2009 ). Student of Guruharkishan public school scored 58% marks in his xth standard . Has done well in the aptitude test and got 75% marks. has joined our Janakpuri centre in August”
“He was recommended to the core batch at Connaught Place in May 2008 by teachers, despite a rather poor school academic record on the basis of the spark of promise shown by him in the classes at CL”
“Interestingly, he stopped coming to core batch in July after attending 45 days as he was feeling that timing is not very appropriate. After persuasion , he started coming again in Aug and results began to come. He has scored 74% in XII but an astounding 603 AIR in JEE 2009”

The most satisfying aspect :
The most exhilarating part of the boy’s journey to success (AIR 603) is that he was a reject by the conventional system of education and the so-called rating agencies. That very boy with abysmally low grades in Class X goes on to crack the IITJEE.
In my own years as a teacher, my most fond recollections of students come from students such as Harpreet (IITJEE, 2009) or Bhupinder Singh (CAT, 2000). These are truly inspiring stories where the victor wins inspite of the odds (of all kinds) !
